SITE-SPECIFIC SOUND INSTALLATION &

ALGORITHMIC COMPOSITION

›Underground Reflections [UR 21:18]‹ was commissioned for the exhibition ›Unter der Erde. Von Kafka bis Kippenberger‹ by the Kunstsammlung NRW.

The visitors were invited to autonomously explore an acoustic

intervention located in a sub-terrestrial canal in Düsseldorf.

Each visitor – equipped with a flashlight – was given a timeframe of 21 minutes and 18 seconds. The visitors found themselves in complete darkness with the distant sound-source as their only guidance.

An algorithmic composition consisting of five different classes of sounds was programmed with the intention to excite the acoustic properties of the underground tube.

Each class of sounds varied over time in pitch, dynamic, timbre,

articulation and order.

The work is engaging with the situational context, objects and participants and challenges an active involvement of the visitors and allowing momentums of transgressions.
